*** Log of SCRAPBOOK USA idea chat held on Sunday, October 4, 1992. Because of some system problems, the entire log didn't get captured - but here's the "lion's share"! Enjoy. AFA Bard AFL Gayle : Welcome to the Apple // Education Forum! Here's our own AFC Tooter with some exciting ideas from Scrapbook USA and other online projects! AFC Tooter : There is a great project called POSTCARD GEOGRAPHY AFC Tooter : in which student learn about the U.S. by trading AFC Tooter : picture postcards through the U.S. mails. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : ClairK1944 would like to organize classes to play online chess. I wonder if we could AFC Tooter : coax some SeniorNet members into the competition? AFC Tooter : Any chess players in the room now? AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : NSRC MMS (John Swang) has brought his National Student Research Center to AOL AFC Tooter : and will review and publish student projects that demonstrate a solid grasp of scientific method in AFC Tooter : research and argument. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : John wants everyone to know that a first special edition of the E-Journal of AFC Tooter : Student Research is now on line. AFC Tooter : Get your copy in the Electronic SchoolHouse PROJECT LIBRARIES. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : *LookOut*, AFLBobloo tells me that he is ready to help organize another season of the AFC Tooter : Online Academic Bowl. Bob has regularly organized Bowl games that have as many AFC Tooter : laughs *LOL* as questions. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : GregPL, AFLZobkiw and I have been talking with a few others about a project linking AFC Tooter : MUSIC CLASSES and possibly student writers. AFC Tooter : NinaTE : Hi again, having trouble tonight keep getting cut off AFC Tooter : Scott62 and the Dead Teachers' Society have created ScienceNet with AFC Tooter : the idea of increasing contact between real scientists and grade school students. They tell AFC Tooter : me they are lining up scientists and plan to publish the results. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : Last year NinaTE coordinated a highly successful project for students at risk. She will AFC Tooter : be back again this year to carry it further with new students. AFC Tooter : She's planning to get started sometime in December. AFC Tooter : Send her e-mail or NinaTE : youcan bet on it! AFC Tooter : post a note in the Electronic SchoolHouse (Keyword ESH) if you're interested. AFC Tooter : Exchanging "I Am" poems is a high interest writing activity for "at risk" learners AFC Tooter : and a great way to get them talking to each other about important issues. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : A folder has been developing in SCHOOL TO SCHOOL containing math word problems AFC Tooter : written by sixth graders. MaryEz has invited classes to join her in writing and AFC Tooter : answering word problems developed from the things students find around them. Be AFC Tooter : sure to count your cookies before the *SnackAttack*, and write a word AFC Tooter : problem to tell us how many you have. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : Opalescent is back and just getting started with her wonderful New Hampshire poets. AFC Tooter : I'll be sending them some poems from my high schoolers this week. AFC Tooter : There are lots of possibilities for others to join our online AFC Tooter : community of writers. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : LisaS4 will be back from Moscow with student exchanges and AFC Tooter : opportunities to host visiting teachers. AFC Tooter : There is a folder on the GLOBAL LINKS board AFC Tooter : in the Electronic SchoolHouse (Keyword ESH) AFC Tooter : with more info. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : and there are several folders where teachers have posted AFC Tooter : messages to find classes for pen pal exchanges domestic and foreign. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : and then, there's ScrapBook AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : The first ScrapBook Writing Project exchange of the new year is well underway AFC Tooter : with 14 schools participating. AFC Tooter : There's plenty of time still to join the year's second ScrapBook exchange AFC Tooter : which is scheduled to begin on AFC Tooter : October 15th. AFC Tooter : Help us to build our ScrapBook of all the places we live and the people, AFC Tooter : traditions and treasures that make up our lives there. And of course join us for a coast AFC Tooter : to coast *FoodFoodFight* at the end of 8 weeks of ScrapBooking. AFC Tooter : There are now more than 100 chapters in the ScrapBook. They come from 23 states and Canada. AFC Tooter : AFC Tooter : Now, I'll open the floor to questions about any of THESE PROJECTS or any NEW IDEAS that AFC Tooter : you have to offer. Just try to allow time for answers before asking new questions. *Drumroll* AFC Tooter : *Drumroll* - Your questions please! **** MAJOR SYSTEM DISRUPTION HERE -- IT'S THE MISSING 10 MINUTES! CALL THE WATERGATE HOTEL, QUICKLY! AFA Bard : Toot!!!! WHAT HAPPENED!!!??? AFC Tooter : ouch :-((((( AFA Bard : FIVE people were dropped at one time! AFC Tooter : Did AVWTC leave? LavonneS : gone AFC Tooter : Where is Gayle. What happened? SandyE : Maybe we're NOT...I was looking for a Twilight Zone sound...We sure need one of those... LavonneS : gone AFA Bard : AVWTC, GAYLE, all of them got ZAPPED at once -- only Lavonne, Sandy and I survived. :)) LavonneS : spooky AFA Bard : very AFC Tooter : I couldn't get back through Telenet. Had to use Tymnet at 1200 baud. AFC Tooter : I can't type 1200 baud anyhow. AFA Bard : Aha! That's IT, Toot! I'm logged on through a special Atlanta node I use when I can't get through SandyE : I must leave for a second. I have a VERY impatient 14 year old who has movie plans and NEEDS to check LavonneS : I don't even see AVWTC listed in Bye AFA Bard : the usual way. SandyE : I hope I can get back on...See ya in a minute AFA Bard : Sandy -- see ya soon! AFC Tooter : Bard, did you see the CNN announcement I sent? LavonneS : My only toll free # is tymnet at 1200 AFA Bard : AFL Gayle's not listed in bye either - spooky! AFC Tooter : I'm sure Lavonne did! AFA Bard : Yep, Toot. The REAL question is WHEN! LavonneS : She's listed on Bye on my screen AFC Tooter : I have the CNN mailing next to my computer. It says nothing about some day. It says NOW. LavonneS : But when I look in CNN area it says soon AFC Tooter : "NOW AVAILABLE FOR EDUCATORS"! AFC Tooter : I know, Lavonne, but the CNN lists a phone number that supposedly is working. LavonneS : You mean to sign on by that number? AFC Tooter : I wonder how many people were knocked off of the system at oncewith that last kick? AFC Tooter : Not a sing-on number, Lavonne. AFA Bard : But Tooter - the CNN stuff has been online ELSEWHERE for some time. The online area here is AFA Bard : not finished yet. :( AFC Tooter : An information and sign-up number. AFA Bard : I wonder too, Tooter. AFC Tooter : Well, CNN just spent a whole lot of money doing mailings all over the country, and I'm trying AFC Tooter : to make sure they get a lot of quick interest via that phone. AFA Bard : Good news - maybe that will push them to get on the ball! AFC Tooter : Gee, nobody has made it back yet. Are we the last people on earth? AFA Bard : Oooo.. now THAT's a scary thought. Sounds like a great SCI FI movie to me! AFC Tooter : I hope Lavonne says the secret word, because there's nobody else to give the free hour to. AFA Bard : ReHi Sandy! Did you have trouble logging back on? LavonneS : is is Rumplestiltskin? AFC Tooter : Ahhh, sandy's back! :-))) Four people left on earth. SandyE : Yes, a little. Remind me never to again cave to a teenager. Next time he can use the car phone... AFC Tooter : And Cheryl!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Five people left on earth. SandyE : What is going on with the lines tonight? AFL Cheryl : Gee...never thought you'd be excited to see me, Toot!! AFA Bard : Cheryl!!!! You're alive! We were sweating things after FIVE folks got zapped simultaneously! AFA Bard : [[ Cheryl ]] AFA Bard : Mary! ReHI! You survived the BIG ZAP of 1992! LavonneS : Mary, where have you been MaryEz : The bottom dropped out and I just got back on. AFC Tooter : [[[[[[Cheryl]]]]]] Kiss and make up. AFA Bard : We lost four others with you, Mary. We're glad you're back! AFA Bard : Whoa, Toot. Open a window - it's steamy in here. :)) SandyE : *ToTheRescue* What an eerie night... AFC Tooter : The zap happened the moment my son kissed me goodnight. Do you suppose that had something to do' MaryEz : It took a good many tries to get back! AFC Tooter : to do with it? MaryEz : *fightgoeson* SandyE : And I thought it was my kid's smelly socks (in my face followed by: Can I PLEASE use the phone!!!) AFC Tooter : The end of the world sure hasn't dampened Mary's spirit. MaryEz : I love that one, as you can hear!!! SandyE : I'm really intrigued by Joe and AFC Tooter : Cheryl, did you experience anything when we got dumped? SandyE : Arlo going around the world for 3 years...That is quite an effort AFL Cheryl : nope... MaryEz : Watch for Chapter III later tonight! AFL Cheryl : but Gayle can't get back online.... SandyE : Who can tell me more? AFC Tooter : Have you tried it at your school, Sandy? AFA Bard : Did Gayle call you, Cheryl? AFL Cheryl : yes LavonneS : Mary, let me ask my ? again. What is the folder where you are working with AFA Bard : Hmmm.. wonder why she didn't call me? LavonneS : word problems? Is it all 6th grade? MaryEz : All 5th and 6th grade social studies classes are doing the game. AFL Cheryl : Well, she say's you only have one phone line silly!! AFC Tooter : It's a ways down on the SCHOOL TO SCHOOL board, Lavonne. SandyE : Not yet, Toot. This is the first time some of my kids have laid eyes and hands SandyE : on Macintoshes, so I AFC Tooter : Mary, Lavonne is asking about the math word problems. MaryEz : Lavonne, it seems that 6th graders have been taking part but that is just by accident, not design. AFA Bard : Nope, Cheryl. I've got three! SandyE : have been orienting like a mad woman. Now that is finally done and I'm into bigger better stuff. AFC Tooter : Sandy, you don't need to have them near a computer. Just download the files and give them to AFL Cheryl : Well, Gayle was under the impression you have one phone line... AFC Tooter : teachers to rtead aloud in classes. You can do it in a class AFC Tooter : with just MaryEz : Any one can take part that wants to but send the answers by direct email rather than posting them AFL Cheryl : She says she has only one 'home' # for you. AFA Bard : We'll fix that. :) MaryEz : in the folder. AFC Tooter : 4 or 5 minutes at the start of a period. AFC Tooter : Are we collecting answers to WHERE IN THE WORLD, Mary? SandyE : I LOVE that...I'll try it. I have some super teachers who are willing and able. Thanx MaryEz : As to Joe and Arlo, you have to figure out his code to get the answer. The code word is at the end of SandyE : I'm also REALLY interested in the CNN/AOL venture. AFC Tooter : I made a ditto handout of WHERE IN THE WORLD and put it in teachers' mail boxes.and put MaryEz : each chapter. The last country was Singapore. AFC Tooter : and put = nothing. AFC Tooter : Don't give it away, Mary! :-))) MaryEz : Joe would like to change the name to World Walk-about with Joe and Arlo. He's afraid of MaryEz : copyright infringements with Where in the World is .... AFA Bard : Rightfully so, Mary. The Walkabout is a great title! AFA Bard : It's so... aboriginal. :))) MaryEz : Kids love it!! They are always pestering for the next clue. Our teachers are only giving one clue MaryEz : a day. AFA Bard : Gayle's back online!!!! SandyE : Bard, you are too much. I was just thinking about aborigines and walkabouts... AFA Bard : Welcome GAYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AFL Gayle : Whew! FINALLY it let me back on! AFC Tooter : Welcome. The world is coming back to life. MaryEz : Yea, Gayle. *fightgoeson* AFA Bard : FYI, Gayle, FIVE folks got dumped simultaneously! AFC Tooter : [[[[[Gayle]]]] *Fanfare* AFA Bard : A new AOL record. :) SandyE : So, can I download the whole WalkAbout thing and start my teachers at the very beginning? MaryEz : Yes, Sandy. AFA Bard : Right, Sandy. It's WELL worth it, too! AFC Tooter : Yes, Sandy! AFC Tooter : Start with #1 and do, perhaps, one per week. MaryEz : I think it would be great for you to add a note about how your kids are responding to it also. MaryEz : Kind of keep up the interest with new AOL explorers. SandyE : Will do...thanks for the hints. MaryEz : People see action they know the board is alive and well. MaryEz : New chapter will be posted later this evening. AFA Bard : Sandy... I'd like to see a similar project for us right here in Gwinnett. Did you know we now have SandyE : Yesterday I bought a really nice USA map and plan to use it for Scrappers. I did see AFA Bard : 18 schools online? MaryEz : I received three new chapters over the weekend. SandyE : some nice World maps also. Maybe we could "track" Arlo and Joe. AFA Bard : A great idea, Sandy. How about a videotaped "news update" on Arlo & Joe's progress? AFC Tooter : That would certainly add to the project. Perhaps find a central location where all pass. AFC Tooter : You could run it as a contest within your school. SandyE : 18 !!! I'm excited. We LSTC are planning to get business cards made up with our AOL and Internet AFC Tooter : First to get it right each week gets mentioned??? SandyE : handles on the cards...it's in the works. We were waiting for everyone to get online. MaryEz : One of our teachers is giving extra credit points for right guesses. MaryEz : I should say right answers. AFA Bard : A wonderful idea again, Sandy. AFC Tooter : #2 was very difficult. I haven';t looked at the new ones. MaryEz : They are tough, but very interesting! SandyE : Bard, we need to encourage Sherah to join the chats. She'd have lots to add. SandyE : Next Sunday is another, right? AFA Bard : Absolutely! Sherah would be great! So would Gail Reath! AFA Bard : Ha! MaryEz : Hi, Nina! LavonneS : Nina, are you starting the at risk project soon? AFC Tooter : Is Minervah still around and GAJane? NinaTE : Hello all sorry I missed you we had guests for dinner and they don't understand AFC Tooter : Nina!!!!!!! NinaTE : Yes, the at risk project will begin soon. I've got my 8th graders going. MaryEz : Yes, Bard, How is Minervah? SandyE : NinaTE...I can relate. My family has begun to think I'm nuts on Sunday nights. NinaTE : I plan to get some of the classes hooked up as I've had about 20 teachers indicate interest AFC Tooter : You and your great At-risk project were mentioned in the intro macros. LavonneS : I've got 4 fifth grade boys I'd like to get into it MaryEz : I know, my son just called from PA and I didn't want to talk to him. SandyE : Nina...don't forget me in Dec. with the at risk kids. RagenT : It took me over half an hour to get on! Called AOL and they said AOL had a big RagenT : BURP! AFC Tooter : I said you'd be starting in December because that was what you told me most recently. Will it be earl AFC Tooter : earleir? MaryEz : Hi, Ragen !!!!! LavonneS : BURP !! is that all? RagenT : Whatever that means! AFL Gayle : It was a GIANT burp. :( AFC Tooter : Sure did, Ragen! MaryEz : I was one of the many burpees! MaryEz : or burped! AFA Bard : Somehow, Lavonne, Sandy and I survived. :) AFC Tooter : It was all caused by Sandy's sons socks! RagenT : burped right off, huh:) RagenT : I don't know, my son's socks are standing next to his shoes:) LavonneS : so where did Nina go now? AFA Bard : a hiccup, maybe, Lavonne? MaryEz : *zaaaap* AFC Tooter : Another grepz. AFC Tooter : *zzzzap* AFA Bard : Welcome DUNMORE and AVWTC! AVWTC : i got cut off about half hour ago--what is going on? LavonneS : AVWTC WELCOME BACK :) AFA Bard : [[[[[ Spotty! ]]]]] Hi! AFC Tooter : AVWTC is back! I was in the middle of answering your question when the system burped. Can';t AFC Tooter : remember what the question was, now. AFC Tooter : Hello Spottysoft. AFC Tooter : And Dunmore. Spottysoft : There was a major sustem bump AVWTC... :( MaryEz : *Gotcha* AFC Tooter : *Welcome* AVWTC : it was about computer time for a whole class and those keyboarding skills??!! Spottysoft : Hi Bard! Toot!! :) AFC Tooter : Oh yes, I was about to tell you (dare I) that in some schools they get parents to do the typing. Spottysoft : {{{{Cheryl}}}} {{{Gayle}}}} :) AVWTC : interesting! MaryEz : You know what, AVWTC, I've decided to forget about keyboarding skills. The kids need to develop a AFL Gayle : Hi, Spotty! :) AFC Tooter : There is a whole section in the Scrapbook ToolKit on bundling the essays once they are typed. AFL Gayle : Really, TooT? Not sure I like that idea. :( MaryEz : need for the skills before you get anywhere with teaching them. And once in 6 days is not productive SandyE : I've found that the kids find the one who can type and crowd around while he/she types. AFC Tooter : In some schools they don't have the facilities for everyone to type, Gayle. MaryEz : because there is no carry over. Familiarity with the keyboard is the important thing. NinaTE : Wow! I got cut off and couldn't get back thought I was in the Twilight Zone AFC Tooter : It's tough in a one-computer classroom. AFA Bard : "computer helpers" (kids who want to learn more and stay after or come before school) might help,AVWTC AFL Gayle : Interestingly, we've got a new computer curriculum for the State Dept. (NC) AFL Gayle : that has all keyboarding learned in 3rd grade! AFC Tooter : Yes, they do that in our Writing Cetner, too, Sandy. SandyE : I've also seen some improvement in typing skills. Kinda, the more they do, the better they get. MaryEz : Now, that's more like it, Gayle. LavonneS : Gayle, how does that work? more computers in 3rd grade rooms? AFL Gayle : Not when we don't have the resources to do it! AFL Gayle : Lavonne, nope. We've just been told to do it. MaryEz : Our high school business dept. is still fighting with me over my expertise in being able to teach MaryEz : keyboarding. LavonneS : do it but not how right? AFC Tooter : You could paint keyboards on the tables, Gayle. RagenT : What are you using to teach keyboarding to your 3rd graders. MaryEz : Only they know how to do it right!!!! AFL Gayle : They have desks, TooT. ;) AFL Gayle : Nothing yet, Ragen. That's one of the major problems! AFL Gayle : Time to announce our free hour winners for tonight! RagenT : I would like to expose my group to keyboarding. SandyE : Isn't there plenty of fun software to teach keyboarding? LavonneS : I'm using Type to Learn. It's not bad AFL Gayle : But first a commercial... Our chat next week will be using America Online in AFL Gayle : the Classroom. AFL Gayle : Same time, same station. ;) AFA Bard : (can't wait - this will be a GREAT chat!) AFC Tooter : And with the new CNN deal EVERYBODY will be using AOL in the classroom!!!! AFL Gayle : Our free hours tonight, yes, plural :) go to SandyE for Joe and Arlo and AFL Gayle : AVWT for ScrapBook! AFA Bard : Yea SANDY and AVWTC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MaryEz : Has it been officially announced yet, Toot? AFC Tooter : I don't see Babz online, and I've got a hectic schedule tonight, still. Can I put you AFC Tooter : off for a week again? AFC Tooter : Mary seems to have bounced out too, Ragen. RagenT : Why not? I have tons of work to do before I sleep. AFC Tooter : Next week if not sooner. RagenT : This job is a 7 am to 12 midnight. AFC Tooter : Next week is a long weekend too. AFC Tooter : Think that far. It will cheer you up. AFC Tooter : Goodnight. RagenT : Hmmm. Ok. RagenT : Goodnight
