8/4/91 8:01:04 PM Opening "chat.8.4" for Chat Log recording. Apple Education Forum -- OPEN CHAT JAM4 : I've got a question! AFA Bard : I'll try to help -- go ahead... JAM4 : I CAN'T LOAD A PICTURE INTO TIME OUT SUPERFONTS MaryEz : Hi all! AFA Bard : Welcome Mary!! Jam's got a question -- maybe you can help us out! AFA Bard : A picture, JAM or a font?? JAM4 : picture! AFA Bard : Aha... Mary, have you used SuperFonts? MaryEz : I'm sorry I don't know anything about SuperFonts. It's one of those things I'm going to learn someday MaryEz : along with a zillion other things.;) AFA Bard : Jam... what type of picture are you attempting to load? JAM4 : paintworks plus AFA Bard : OK. What happens when you try to load it? JAM4 : I can't find location for insert AFA Bard : location for insert? Hmmm.. do you mean the Paintworks file doesn't show up on your disk catalog or AFA Bard : there is no Paintworks translator in SuperFonts? JAM4 : It dosent show up on my files I'm new at this! AFA Bard : I see! OK. I've just worked a wee bit with SuperFonts but I suspect it has to do with the AFA Bard : type of file you created in Paintworks. Try saving the Paintworks file in a different format and see AFA Bard : if that works. If it doesn't.. visit our Apple Graphics Forum (Keyword: AGR) and leave a message AFA Bard : in the Let's Discuss area. JAM4 : thanks AFA Bard : welcome! AFA Bard : Mary... what's new with you lately? MaryEz : Bard, we are just starting a thunderstorm so if I drop out please excuse me. AFA Bard : ((( BTW.. this is an OPEN CHAT.. no specific topic.. if you have a question PLEASE jump right AFA Bard : in!! >>> AFA Bard : OK Mary.. I understand! I lost a IIgs modem to one two weeks ago! AFA Bard : [[[ Ragen!!]]] AFA Bard : Hiya Ragen, Say howdy to JAM4. MaryEz : I just finished summer school. Taught Logo, Lego/Logo and VCR Companion. RagenT : Hello! Is Gayle away? Howdy Jam! AFA Bard : Yup. Gayle's away this week. She'll be back soon, though! AFA Bard : Ragen.. have you used SuperFonts? MaryEz : Hi, Jam. Sorry I ignored you. Welcome RagenT : Speaking of Lego logo! Tell me a little about it! RagenT : Superfonts is how I write to my Mo-in-Law in Greek, with the font called sumbol RagenT : symbol, that is, I write with English letters but in greek and print thru RagenT : superfonts. AFA Bard : Ragen.. Jam's got a question about transferring a graphic through Superfonts -- does it handle AFA Bard : graphics as well as fonts? RagenT : I really don't know, never tried. You know who might though, is MidgeF. JAM4 : has anyone tried superforms? AFA Bard : Aha! There you go, Jam. Send e-mail to MidgeF with your question -- she's terrific! AFA Bard : Nope -- no Superforms here. Anyone else? RagenT : Is it superforms you wanted rather than superfonts? JAM4 : fonts AFA Bard : Tell us about SuperForms, Jam. RagenT : Midge knows quite a bit about compatability of graphics and can convert RagenT : any graphic to anything. RagenT : BRB, sick 9 year old. MaryEz : Bard, do you use Quicken? AFA Bard : Yes, Mary... both the MAC and GS version. :) JAM4 : you need fonts to use the forms. You can make nice looking invoice's AFA Bard : (It STILL hasn't added money to my bank accounts yet!!) MaryEz : I am the treasurer of our church Preschool and have been using a spreadsheet I developed in MSwks but MaryEz : I was wondering if Quicken would do a better job for me. I do payroll and withholding and FICA for MaryEz : 6 employees as well as paying all the bills. Would it take care of all of that for me? AFA Bard : ((JAM.. so you're trying to install new fonts to use with SuperForms??)) AFA Bard : Mary... Quicken's kind of a "lightweight" accounting package -- all it does is let you set AFA Bard : up several accounts and then code expenses, revenues into subsections within each account. The AFA Bard : resulting data can be translated into a MSWorks or AWORKS spreadsheet. I think what you need might be JAM4 : no, fonts are okay pictures are a problem. AFA Bard : something more "hefty"... something like "Managing Your Money" or.. uhm.. trying to remember... MaryEz : Hi, Frank, how are you? BCS Frank : Hi, enjoying a cool Summer evening. :) AFA Bard : Hiya BFRANK! JAM4 : Is frank in boston? BCS Frank : Y'all ready for October? MaryEz : Storm seems to be going around me!! Thanks for that. BCS Frank : I'm just North of Boston. :) RagenT : Back, false alarm. Hi Frank. What's in October? AFA Bard : Mary... MYM was the program I was thinking of... there's a GREAT comparison of accounting/finance MaryEz : My son and family were in Foxboro this weekend for a wedding. BCS Frank : Or, if you prefer, a little farther north from Milton. :) AFA Bard : program in September '91 MACUSER mag. (pp 97.) :)) AFA Bard : They recommend MYM for the type of work you need -- Quicken's not "hefty" enough. :) MaryEz : Thanks, Bard. You are a dear as always. BCS Frank : October is Computers in Education month. RagenT : I'm east of Foxboro, Mary. JAM4 : It's south afa RagenT : Of course, Frank. BCS Frank : Of course I think all year should be Computers in Education month. AFA Bard : Jam -- I'm SOUTH! :))) Here in Georgia it's a beautiful, HOT evening! RagenT : Jam, I'm from Bridgewater, just south of Brockton. AFA Bard : Me too, Frank. You got something incredible planned for EDUCATION month (OCT.)? MaryEz : I think we are going to do a Computer Fair. AFA Bard : What might that include, Mary? RagenT : Now, that's a neat idea, Mary. BCS Frank : We'll be doing something nifty at our BCS Apple II meeting... BCS Frank : ... still lining up guests. MaryEz : We had a successful one two years ago. We showed student work and had demos done by kids of software BCS Frank : Of course that'll be simulcast live, right here on AOL :) AFA Bard : That's a terrific idea, Mary. I've done that too. For this year, I've also challenged Apple and IBM MaryEz : they use in school. A few vendors came to show their stuff. We did some telecommunicating but AFA Bard : to do a live "battle of multimedia" for our district's PTA. :)) Should be interesting! MaryEz : now we have AOL so we will definitely do a TC demo. JAM4 : Frank, Are you going on8/10 to Beagle Bros? AFA Bard : Yea! Telecom Online! Makes a great demo -- do you folks use LCD overhead panel? AFA Bard : *** Remember, we're giving away a free HOUR at the end of tonight's chat! Hang in there and you BCS Frank : Hehe... I better, Skip & I will be typing the simulcast. :)0 AFA Bard : might win!! ** RagenT : Frank, did you know that Easton is putting on a Tech expo in September? BCS Frank : We're thinking of putting AOL "on screen" for our audience, BCS Frank : but we usually have some other product BCS Frank : or technique demo running on our "main screen." BCS Frank : No, would Easton like some BCS help? RagenT : You might be interested in having a booth there. AFA Bard : Now THERE's a great idea, Frank! BCS Frank : Certainly sounds interesting... :) AFA Bard : (( Frank's a PRO! )) RagenT : They plan on having one hour presentations, 12 computers, all day with lots MaryEz : We use our Sony projection system for viewing AOL and now I can use the View All function of my BCS Frank : as opposed to an anti MaryEz : Digicard network. RagenT : of school dietricts attending. BCS Frank : Hmmm, can you email me some data..? AFA Bard : :) Frank. Sony? You mean you got the big kahuna color video di$play? RagenT : Apple computer, WGBH, ATT, Mass DEPT of Ed, wtc... BCS Frank : I'd sure like to try to get something going there. RagenT : BRB AFA Bard : Welcome William! William684 : Hi BCS Frank : Hi, William! :) BCS Frank : Sony? No, we dropped using projector systems for BCS Frank : most meetings, and use a VERY large color monitor... JAM4 : HI William What's happin' MaryEz : Not the biggest one. The one I have is mounted in the ceiling of my lab. William684 : does anyone know if i can do a dos 5.0 upgrade over dr dos 5.0 ? BCS Frank : we like the color rendering of the 640-200 graphics. BCS Frank : No, Mary, ... the one we have is still (barely) movable BCS Frank : by means of our strongest volunteer. AFA Bard : William... try typing KEYWORD: DOS .. that'll take you to the DOS forum. THey'll be able to help you AFA Bard : out there. :)) William684 : thank you BCS Frank : William, does Dr DOS has a "disinstall" option? AFA Bard : Welcome Karen!!! BCS Frank : Hi, Karen :) KarenSB : hello AFA Bard : Another Massachusetts-ite! :)) MaryEz : The Digicard network has a video net which allows me to have all computers view any other computer in RagenT : Back, Ok Frank, I'll send you the info. MaryEz : the lab which is great for showing AOL. JAM4 : Goodnight everyone BCS Frank : We use sneaker-net :) AFA Bard : Nite, Jam! Thanks for stopping by! BCS Frank : Night, JAM! RagenT : Goodnight! MaryEz : I just have all view the computer that is hooked to the modem. BCS Frank : Thanks, Ragen... hope we can run with it. :) AFA Bard : >>> Remember -- we'll be giving away a FREE HOUR to someone in THIS room tonight! Hang around 'till MaryEz : Night Jam. AFA Bard : the end of the chat to find out who!! >> AFA Bard : Mary... does this freeze the student's keyboards? BCS Frank : Does anyone here use Apple IIs in a science class? MaryEz : Yes!! AFA Bard : (The video link, that is?) AFA Bard : Yes, Frank. We use VISIFROG (dissection simulation) and HyperStudio a great deal. :) AFA Bard : Also.. Science Master Toolkit (probes) BCS Frank : Do you do any direct reading of instrumentation with the A2s? BCS Frank : Ahh, the probes. BCS Frank : How well do they work out? AFA Bard : S.Master allows reading with a light sensor or temperature probe -- there's also a mike. The MaryEz : We do databases of scientests and the kids pick their own Nobel Prize winners. We also use AFA Bard : equipment is pretty sensitive for "off the shelf" stuff. It's also VERY easy to use! MaryEz : Broderbund's Science Tool Kit. AFA Bard : Neat, Mary. I like the Scientist idea. That's be REALLY great in HStudio or Tutor Tech, too! BCS Frank : Can you interface the probe reading with HyperStudio or HyperCard? MaryEz : I don't know, Frank. Why don't you leave a question for RWagner, Inc.? AFA Bard : I think so, Frank. It works like any other peripheral (joystick, etc.) -- but that function isn't AFA Bard : built in to the software. Roger DOES, indeed, have some XCMDS that might do that, though! Great AFA Bard : suggestion, Mary! AFA Bard : Welcome JoeRic!! BCS Frank : Let me put it this way.... BCS Frank : If you could get a package that'd allow you to do that, BCS Frank : what features would you most like to see? BCS Frank : Hi, Joe :) MaryEz : Welcome, Joe. AFA Bard : I'd like to see real-time data exchange, onscreen graphs and "button selectable" probes. How abou AFA Bard : t you Mary? MaryEz : I'm not a science teacher but I would think a graphing feature built-in would be helpful. BCS Frank : "Real time data-exchange?" You mean reading data real time? AFA Bard : Yes, Frank. And archiving the data on screen, on disk and in some "compelling and meaningful" way.:) JoeRic : So that it would produce areal and exciting learning experience for your students right RagenT : I'm listening... BCS Frank : As you may guess, I'm scratching my head on these issues.... MaryEz : It's a pain to have to boot up another piece of software to graph your data. BCS Frank : I think we're getting close to "lab in a box" time. AFA Bard : Agreed, Mary! What do you have up your sleeve, Frank??? You ready to put out a software package?? BCS Frank : or "lab-in-a-stack." RagenT : How about instead of doing science lab reports on paper, kids can do on RagenT : computer and compare results. RagenT : My daughter finds lab reports very ho hum stuff. BCS Frank : Well, once you have your data, BCS Frank : HyperMedia are great for result presentation. JoeRic : Most of my students already do AFA Bard : Great, Ragen. And why not add a feature for filling in a "teacher created" lab write-up template? BCS Frank : <> :) AFA Bard : >>> Remember -- we'll be giving away a FREE HOUR to someone in THIS room tonight! Hang around 'till AFA Bard : 9:00 pm for the BIG announcement!>> BCS Frank : Hmmm... any "lab-pack" should have teacher support as well as RagenT : Yes, that fills into a data base, almost like filemaker? BCS Frank : different versions for diff grade levels. JoeRic : And different tracks BCS Frank : I don't have anything to show -- at this time. AFA Bard : I agree, Frank. And maybe it could come with some experiment ideas -- just the beginnings of ideas AFA Bard : on how to use the Lab-in-a-stack.. not the answers. :) MaryEz : Any probes etc. must be durable!!! BCS Frank : Are teachers turned off by having some "cook book" experiments in lab kits? AFA Bard : JoeRic.. what do you think? MaryEz : I think the cookbook experiments are good for planting seeds. Then kids can have a basis to MaryEz : build on. RagenT : Not for starters, I would guess, it would show how to use the kit and then they RagenT : could take off. JoeRic : I like the experiments that are real challenges for both the students and the teacher. BCS Frank : What probes would you want supported? Temp, of course, MaryEz : As with Lego/Logo, you build the plans that they give you then get creative when you understand how BCS Frank : and photocel, but what else? MaryEz : they work. AFA Bard : Temperature, light (photocel), sound.. and how about a pulse/heartrate monitor while you're at it? AFA Bard : Other ideas.. relative humidity... motion... and why not respiration? MaryEz : Vibration as in earthquake etc. BCS Frank : ... and of course electrical multimeter. :) JoeRic : What about basic chemical analysis? BCS Frank : Spectroscopic? AFA Bard : Yes, JoeRic.. why not pH, too! JoeRic : definite MaryEz : Great, we can test the swimming pool;) BCS Frank : Rotating prism with photocel? JoeRic : Why not see how healthy the water is in the local school's pool or Y AFA Bard : Hmm.. prism is nice, but could add cost. Just a photocel is enough to get started. BCS Frank : Are you sure you want to know, Joe? :) AFA Bard : I can see LOTS of "real world science" that could be done with a complete kit. :) JoeRic : Not really but the kids would be curious AFA Bard : ..so might the health department! ... BCS Frank : I agree anything like this has to be modular... add as you grow. AFA Bard : Welcome Murray! TEACHER ms : Thanks !!! BCS Frank : Hi, Murray :) JoeRic : Hi Murray TEACHER ms : hello All :) BCS Frank : How flexable are your current probe kits? Can you make up BCS Frank : and attach your own probes? JoeRic : And add as you get money from your school board MaryEz : That's a lesson in itself for the gifted kid in your class!! AFA Bard : Basically, the probe kits come with a "black box interface" that has 4 RCA-type interface sockets.. AFA Bard : the software drives the probes. I'm sure you COULD write your own drivers, though. :) BCS Frank : Kinda hoping so, Bard. :) JoeRic : What system runs these probes Apple II E or GS AFA Bard : Broderbund's Science Toolkit does. :) BCS Frank : Is the BST GS/OS? BCS Frank : or ProDOS-8? AFA Bard : I've only used the BST Apple // (ProDos) version. Is there a GS/OS version, Mary? MaryEz : I've only used the IIe version. AFA Bard : *** Winner of FREE HOUR announced in just THREE minutes!! *** AFA Bard : There's a Mac version, too.. can't remember the name, though. :) BCS Frank : 180 Seconds!? AFA Bard : What's that in nanoseconds, Frank? JoeRic : Or MPS BCS Frank : a VERY VERY long time.... :) BCS Frank : MIPS? MaryEz : Some IIe's don't work with BST. I've found that the more recent IIe's won't boot some of my software. RagenT : I wonder why, Mary? BCS Frank : Mythical Instructions Per Seconds? AFA Bard : Really, Mary? I've been using it on IIgs's with good results. AFA Bard : OK... AFA Bard : Here it comes... AFA Bard : The moment you've all been waiting for... MaryEz : No problem with gs just IIe's of recent mfg. AFA Bard : it's the FREE HOUR g iveaway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AFA Bard : Tonight... a FREE HOUR goes to the person who said the following ... MaryEz : Hurry!!!!!! RagenT : ...? AFA Bard : *** suspense is great isn't it ?? *** JoeRic : A MaryEz : *Clink-Klank* AFA Bard : The keyword tonight was EXCITING!!! so the Free hour goes to JOERIC!!!! Let's hear AFA Bard : thunderous applause!!! AFA Bard : Congrats to JOERIC!!! BCS Frank : Congratulations, Joe !!!!!!!!!!!! :) JoeRic : Thanks MaryEz : ()()()()()()())()()()()()())()()()( TEACHER ms : Gongrats, Joe !!!!!!!!!!!!! BCS Frank : RagenT : ()()()JoeRic()()(! AFA Bard : A non-prime hour will be credited to your account within about 48 hours, JoeRic. Thanks to JoeRic AFA Bard : and all you folks for joining in tonight's "topic free" chat!!! AFA Bard : Remember us each week at 8 pm in the AED conference room! AFA Bard : *** END of commercial! *** ::))))) RagenT : Was a pleasure, and keeps me inspired! AFA Bard : And Frank.. we're all waiting for your entry into the world of Science software!!! BCS Frank : Why not, these are exciting times in education! MaryEz : Night all!! RagenT : Bye! BCS Frank : And we're only a few months from the great education budget recovery. AFA Bard : Night, Mary, Ragen! BCS Frank : Night, Mary :) JoeRic : I hope so JoeRic : Goodnight Mary and Rage AFA Bard : I hope you're right, Frank. The GA legislature is about to slash 10% off our budgets. :((( BCS Frank : The worst is not over.... BCS Frank : ... but there has to be a bottom to the valley. JoeRic : Frank If BCS stands for Boston Computer Society I understand perfectly what you mean BCS Frank : And the recovery with be loaded with opportunities BCS Frank : to put together systems better than before. JoeRic : I hope so BCS Frank : Joe, that the BCS :) AFA Bard : I agree, Frank. These are "the best of times and the worst of times.." L)) BCS Frank : Watched Roger Wagner at KFest... he had crowds standing up and cheering BCS Frank : over HyperMedia...:) JoeRic : I understand having been layed off and rehired for the fourth year I count myself as a lucky one. AFA Bard : Whew.. Joe! Congrats! You ARE lucky! AFA Bard : Roger's GREAT.. he really is a crowd pleaser! BCS Frank : Nip and Tuck! BCS Frank : Yes, and Roger's a great teacher educator as well, BCS Frank : and travels a great deal to do just that. JoeRic : Goodnight All AFA Bard : Night, Joe BCS Frank : Night, Joe :) BCS Frank : Hmmmmm.... AFA Bard : Hmmmmm... BCS Frank : the crowd seems to be thinning.... AFA Bard : Right... off to edit this prodigous log!! AFA Bard : G'night, Frank. See you online! 8/4/91 9:15:29 PM Closing Chat Log.
