Date: 1/23/94 Start Time: 8:00:05 PM End Time: 9:05:42 PM Number of participants: 14 Participants: AFA AndyW, AFA Bard, AFL Gayle, Bdemir, BobFrost, Elaine 100, HYPERGUY, JanineF, MAGSL, MaristR, MaryEz, Noel25, Rook2, Susan G2 AFA Bard : A// Education Chat held Sunday, 1/23/94 from 8-9 PM. Special Guest: Quality Computers. MaryEz : Hi Bard. How are you? AFA Bard : Mary! I'm doing just fine. It was a balmy 61 degrees here today. :) How are you? MaryEz : I invited my sister to come and meet you all. She just joined AOL a week ago Friday and has use up all her hours already!! AFA Bard : Wow! Is she there? MaryEz : It got up to a balmy 20 degrees here today. I've been fighting something with chills and fever and coughing. No, she is in Woodbridge about 25 miles from here. AFA Bard : Neat. All in the family! My mom's been online for a year- my dad (in Mass.) got a computer for Christmas and will be online within a week or so. :) Welcome Bdemir! MaryEz : She should be arriving momentarily. Oh, there she is. AFA Bard : Introduce us, Mary! Bdemir : Hi, this is so exciting. How did you know I was here? MaryEz : Hi, Betsy, Meet Bard Williams from Atlanta, Georgia MaryEz : Hi, Gayle, meet my sister, Betsy. She is new to AOL. AFA Bard : (::: bowing :::) Welcome to the Education Forum online conference, Betsy. If you are ANYTHING like your wonderful sister, Mary, I like you already. :) MaryEz : We are so excited because our other sister is visiting in California and we are writing to her through CompuServe. MAGSL : Thanks Bdemir : Thank you. I can't begin to fill her shoes. AFA Bard : Did she escape the quakes, Mary? AFL Gayle : Hi, Betsy! You're in great hands with your sister! You'll be an AOL wiz soon!:) MaryEz : Betsy is looking for a small business of less than 80 employees that is growing fast. She is taking her MBA. Bdemir : I hope I can keep up. MaryEz : Do you have any suggestions. AFA Bard : Sure you can, Betsy. We all remember when we were just beginning, too! You'll certainly find that AOL is a great business resource, too! MaryEz : Bob is from Alaska, Betsy. Hi, Bob. Bdemir : I need to consult about a case study with a Human Resources person in a business of about 80 employees. Hi BobFrost Elaine 100 : Hi everyone. I had a hard time trying to get on line tongiht. AFA Bard : Welcome Elaine!! Meet MaryEz's sister Betsy (screenname: Bdemir). :) I did too, Elaine. Very slow local node. BobFrost : Hope everyone survived the week of winter there in the southland. Bdemir : Same here Elaine 100 : Hi Bdemir. BobFrost : It's 30 degrees and sunny here. AFA Bard : Yup, Bob. It was a long week, but it's finally over. It was 61 today. :) MaryEz : It's 20 and gray here. Elaine 100 : Still can't beat the FL weather. BobFrost : I, too, had difficulty getting on....again! AFL Gayle : We went to school 2 hours delayed on Thurs. because it was so cold they AFA Bard : Well folks, let's get this conference underway! AFL Gayle : couldn't get the busses started. AFA Bard : Our guest tonight, Quality Computers, might pop in anytime. Until then, I've got a few ideas. :) MaryEz : Us too, Gayle. Only it was one hour. AFA Bard : Remember that if you hang in there and enjoy the chat, you could win a FREE ONLINE HOUR! The hour is awarded to lucky participant that says the "secret word" in the context of our discussion. Bdemir : I sure could use it!! AFA Bard : What does this mean for you? It means ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS and participate in the discussion! :) Elaine 100 : I'll be back, just got a call from my daughter at college. Doesn't she know this is my AOL time? AFA Bard : Get her online, Elaine! :) BobFrost : I found out on Monday that we'll probably be getting a lab of LC IIIs. AFA Bard : It's been a while since we've all been together... anyone got a burning issue? MaryEz : My nephew calls Betsy and I the CyberSisters. BobFrost : So I really need to find out about AT EASE or KIDDESK MaryEz : Yes, I do, Bard. AFA Bard : LC III's ? Really? OK Bob--- anyone ou;there used AT EASE or KIDDESK? BobFrost : What are the good things and drawbacks of each. Any ideas? MaryEz : Saturday I spent 6 hours rearranging computers to make room for an LCIII. We have an SE30 and an LCII AFA Bard : At Ease and KidDesk are both "front-end" menu programs for the Macintosh. Bob- have you seen FoolProof? MaryEz : sharing an old laser printer. Every time one or the other prints, the printer has to reinitiaize. Reintialize, that is. BobFrost : I've seen nothing yet but this time I'd like to plan ahead...novel eh? AFA Bard : Welcome HyperGuy! Mary.. I've got an idea what THAT problem is! :) HYPERGUY : Hello all from the Hyperguy AFA Bard : Bob-- FoolProof is a front-end program that has all the protection of AT EASE and KIDDESK, (and more) MaryEz : The SE is on system 6.0.5 and the II on system 7. HYPERGUY : Hyper... is for a HyperStudio Guru! AFA Bard : and also perserves the Mac interface. I'd suggest you check it out! Otherwise- I'd suggest that Kiddesk and At Ease are really similar. KidDesk seems to work better with network stuff. Mary-- your problem, I think, is your version of printer driver. It's OK to try to load the S7 BobFrost : These IIIs will be in stand alone config. with (probably) no one responsible AFA Bard : on your 6.0.5 computer. It's the "LASERWRITER" icon. Make sure you BACKUP before you try! BobFrost : for their upkeep on a daily basis. whatever we get better be foolproof AFA Bard : Mary.. do you use some kind of front-end program on your Macs? MaryEz : I don't mind the reinitializing but I don't like the wasting of the sheet of paper at each initial -ization. At Adams we use At Ease. We are about to upgrade it. AFA Bard : What are the differences between At Ease and AT Ease 2.0? MaryEz : I don't use it but my aide does. He likes it. At Ease 2.0 is not as easy to get around. I have heard that high school kids have not problem beating AT Ease. BobFrost : This is going to be a BIG jump from our IIe lab and I'll be asking lots of questions like this for quite a while. AFA Bard : Hmmm.. you might try FoolProof. You can get a full school site license for around $400. That price blows away AtEase, which is about $50 a copy, I think. If you'd like a "testimonial" for Foolproof- send e-mail to Sherah1 or SandyE, they both swear by it. Bob.. tell us more about the lab. How will it be used? Bdemir : Bye! Everyone! It was nice to meet you. I'll stop in again, but must finish my investment MaryEz : When you get to 7/8 grade, you always begin to have those kids who will try to beat the system. AFA Bard : Bye Betsy! Hiya Susan! Bdemir : report for church and then start international business homework. BobFrost : Is it easy to share Imagewriter II printers on a non-network? AFL Gayle : Bye, Betsy! No free hour for you if you leave, though. Susan G2 : Hi it took me 20 minutes to get online, but I got here. :-) Bdemir : Darn it!! MaryEz : Get your homework done!! AFA Bard : what do you mean, Bob? Sharing a IIe on a Mac network just needs two things: a physical connection (like a PhoneNet BobFrost : I'm going to have only 3 to 4 printers. Can I use fileshare or somesuch MaryEz : Betsy is in her second year at the University of New Haven getting her MBA. She is 54 and I am proud of her. BobFrost : daisychain situation or just use switch boxes? AFA Bard : connector) and a LocalTalk Option Card installed in the PRINTER. Once installed, the IW will be visible to all comptuers on the mini-network. No server needed. :) HYPERGUY : Bob, Quality has got a printer share system called II Easy Print Plus BobFrost : Thanks, Bard. That doesn't sound too, bad. AFA Bard : Hyper--- tell us about IIEasy Print! Welcome Andy! AFA AndyW : Hi.. Just stopped by to see what's happening.. Doesn't look like QC is here (like the signon screen said).. HYPERGUY : They have systems that connect upto 5 computers to the same printer AFL Gayle : Andy, is Online Enhancer shipping yet? AFA Bard : No, Andy, but we're talking about their products anyway. :) Hyper-- is this a card-wire system or a switchbox? AFA AndyW : Almost.. Printed up the labels for the disks tonight, and have 75 disks labeled.. I gotta proofread the docs once more before taking them to the printer.. Should start shipping by the end of the week.. HYPERGUY : Bard, it's a 512 K buffered box that connects SuperSerial cards from the IIe's to the same IWII printer. Works off ports on IIGS and the MACs AFA Bard : Is the switching automatic? HYPERGUY : Bard, Yes. Forst one in , the first one to output. Its stores data in sequence. The buffer box is expandable to 2 Megs. The PC is also supported. AFA Bard : Ron- is it expensive? Welcome Thelonius! re-hi Susan!!!!!! Susan G2 : Whew! ::dusting off dirt:: I got stuck somewhere in cyberspace. You could read me but I couldn't read anyone else. AFA Bard : Welcome Buch! ** remember folks, a FREE HOUR will be awarded to a conference attendee at the 9 pm!! * HYPERGUY : The IIe print pkg. ( 4 units) is $400. The IIGS,Mac, or PC (5 units) $230 AFA Bard : Wow, Hyper, that is a GREAT price considering one IW printer costs about $400! Anyone else out there use some kind of switchbox comparable to the one Hyper's been talking about? Hiya Noel! Noel25 : Hi BobFrost : I use a Pacemark in my IIe lab that works great with 7 inputs... AFL Gayle : Who makes that, Bob? Cost? AFA Bard : Bob.. is the PaceMark self-switching? BobFrost : but they're DB-25 pin. I don/t think I can use it with Macs. HYPERGUY : Hey that's the Manufacturer for II Easy Print Plus ( PaceMark!) BobFrost : I believe it was around $600, selfswitching, 256k buffer. I thought it was, Hyper, just wasn't sure. HYPERGUY : If you get Enhance, from Quality Computers; it's the catalog p. C-29 Noel25 : Have you ever attended any of the teacher discussions online? AFA Bard : What about LCD panels-- anyone out there recommend one? Susan G2 : We are going to start investing in the boxes that connect the computer to the TV instead of LCD's bard AFA Bard : Welcome Rook! AFL Gayle : Noel, you mean the TTALK ones on Thursdays at 9:30 pm in TIN? I have. Susan G2 : They are much cheaper. Rook2 : boxes that connect tv to computer? AFA Bard : You going to use the LTV card or go directly from a Mac AV, Susan? BobFrost : If you don't have one (LCD) get one, anyone. Great teaching tool! Susan G2 : IBM to TV. No macs at my school. HYPERGUY : LCD's are OK, but not if there is any animations. It can't handle them. Noel25 : Bard, can you participate in the discussions on TTALK? AFA Bard : right Hyper- except the really expensive ones. Rook2 : I have Mac and am currently utilizing video camera to project from computer screen to tv screen which is larger is there a bnetter way? AFA Bard : Sure Noel. Just hang out in the TIN on Thursdays at 9:30. Susan G2 : How do you do that Rook? With the dubing cords? The TV boxes are about 300 a pop. Noel25 : Thanks. You're pretty good at handling two conversations at the same time. Rook2 : simply by focusing video camera on computer screen] What is this about tv boxes? BobFrost : Pretty much like a staff meeting at school, isn't it Noel? AFA Bard : Rook- there are several "black boxes" through which you can connect your Mac to any TV set. The LTV Susan G2 : Or IBM....:-) AFA Bard : card is INTERNAL and provides a standard "video out" plug. Right Susan. :) Rook2 : I wouldn't need a vcr then? AFA Bard : Thanks, Noel. So are you! No Rook. Goes straight through. Rook2 : Will LTV work with LCIII? Susan G2 : No you wouldn't. They cost about 300 each. BobFrost : Hi, MaristR, I couldn't find Scott on our system. AFA Bard : Yes, Rook. Roger! How are you? Rook2 : Where can I get LTV card? Any Mac supplier? MaristR : Thanks for looking Bob. Bard I'm doing great now that it has warmed up. Susan G2 : ANy mail order. It is cheaper. Rook2 : thanks AFA Bard : MacWarehouse or MacConnection both sell it for less than $300.00. Susan G2 : Much cheaper than an LCD panel and good quality too so you are more likely to get it at school AFA Bard : Works really great with a big-screen TV, too. (large group presentations). Text is readable down to about 12 points, too! Susan G2 : Wish I had a large screen.Right now we use an LCD (old and cheap) and it only is visable with the ligh ts off. AFA Bard : Roger-- do you use an LCD panel? MaristR : We use several, but we usually use Lanschool on the network. Susan G2 : What is Lanschool? Rook2 : Give me suggestion where to call for LTV cards? MaristR : It allows the teacher to take over the students computer. Each student then sees what the teacher is doing. AFA Bard : LanSchools for PC's right, Rog? (There are equivalents for Macs/IIes- ScreenShare or Timbuktu) MaristR : You can also look at a student's computer and see what they are doing. HYPERGUY : Rook2, Quality Computers at 1-800-777-3642 $289.95 BobFrost : Rook, MacWarehouse, latest flier pg. 66. $299 for Lc/Performa AFA Bard : A great price HyperGuy- Go for that one, Rook! BobFrost : Better deal, Hyper. MaristR : It's part of the Novell Network and is from Intel. It is a PC program. It won t work with Windows. Rook2 : what you see on computer screen is then what you see on tv How does mouse work-on original computer screen? AFA Bard : Timbuktu, a product from Farallon, Inc. works with both Macs and Windows. MaristR : Does it work over the network. How many computers can you take over with Timbuktu? AFA Bard : Yup... Timbuktu has NO limits to "capture", I think. It allows you to "observe", "control" or "update" each computer. MaristR : I'll have to look into it. AFA Bard : It's a bit pricey though. :( We use it for training. It's really great to be able to broadcast a student's screen to all other students and LOCK their keyboards in the meantime! Rook2 : Bob-last questiuon, I promise AFA Bard : Go rook! Rook2 : w/ ltv-ho0w do you control com-puter-w/ mouse on originalt computer screen-or does mouse brecome active on tv? AFA Bard : LTV retains BOTH images, that of your monitor and the one on the TV screen. It activates the mouse on both screens. Rook2 : wow-I learned something tomnite AFA Bard : It's really cool. Susan G2 : REally it is only the image you see on the TV, correct? The mousing is done on the computer screen. AFA Bard : Right, Susan, but the "available area" is really larger than the TV screen, so you can prepare stuff Susan G2 : I hope it is cool. I have talked my administrator into buying bunches for teachers. AFA Bard : and then move it into the "active area" for the TV screen. ** Five minutes until our FREE HOUR giveaway! ** Susan G2 : Not sure I understand what you mean by active and available??? HYPERGUY : Anyone able to talk an administrator into anything deserves more than a pat on the back Susan G2 : <----bowing BobFrost : Ok, what about keyboarding software for the MAC. Preferably CHEAP AFA Bard : Hmm.. anyone else out there use LTV? Help me explain! It's kinda like having two full-screen monitor areas side by side. Only one part can be seen on the TV screen- the part you'd normally see AFL Gayle : LOL, HyperGuy! SO true. :) AFA Bard : on the computer screen. The "extra fringe area" is a small workarea. susan is GREAT at that-- do you contract to other school systems as a "principal convincer" susan? AFL Gayle : Do you have the //e card for the Macs, Bob? BobFrost : No cards Susan G2 : LOL AFA Bard : Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing can be bought very cheaply for a lab- around $12 a copy. Susan G2 : How about Mavis BobFrost : We're blowing our whole wad on the Macs. not much left for software. AFA Bard : There are a couple of public domain keyboarding programs in the MED libraries, Bob. Check there, too. Susan G2 : Mavis is very cheap I think AFA Bard : *** It's FREE HOUR time!!!! **** *** It's FREE HOUR time!!!! **** First, a word from our sponsor.. AFA Bard : Join us NEXT Sunday, same time, for BEST OF AED SOFTWARE.. let us know what Apple // software you've downloaded that's just irresistable! Susan G2 : Shoot I lost all my sounds when I upgraded to beta. AFA Bard : Drumroll, Gayle... Susan G2 : So I 'll pretend to hear the drumroll. Drumrool AFL Gayle : *Drumroll* AFA Bard : the winner of tonight's free hour- for saying the word "SHARE" first is... HYPERGUY! Congrats!!!! A FREE HOUR will be credited to your AOL account within 72 hours! AFL Gayle : *Applause* for Hyperguy! AFA Bard : Yippee!!! Applause! Susan G2 : Hip hip for hyper guy JanineF : YEAY!!! Night and congrats Hyperguy AFA Bard : Watch the newspapers this week for some wonderful news from Apple Computer as the 10th anniversary HYPERGUY : Thanks for the hour gang. These sessions are always a pleasure and very informa tive! AFA Bard : of the Macintosh approaches. Noel25 : Congrats! Have a good week everyone. AFA Bard : Hope you all have a GREAT week- CONGRATS, again to HyperGuy! If you'd like a TRANSCRIPT of this online conference- watch our AED NEW FILES library tomorrow! :) G'night! MaristR : I've got a 15 year old. I know what you mean. BobFrost : Thanks for the help, Bard and others. Bye from Alaska. AFA Bard : Bye Bob! Stay WARM!
